First Meeting

I like to meet with you to understand your concerns and needs about your current issues and any past issues that still may be affecting you. We look at how you would like to be coping differently with them and if I think I can help you. I will help you clarify your thoughts and feelings about the difficulties you are experiencing. Together we will work to enable you to find a way forward and to enhance your sense of well-being.

My Approaches

I was a teacher of young children and studied child development. Having worked with young children I was aware of how our early experiences impact on us and later decided I wanted to work with adults to help them with the effects of their earlier lives. In 1993 I started counselling training and completed a 2 year Diploma in Humanistic/Gestalt Counselling. Gestalt therapy is about assisting the client to become more aware of themselves, their feelings and behaviours in a supportive relationship and recognises that change will happen as a result of this. We trust the client to get to where they need to get to that is right for them, rather than the therapist being an expert and telling the client what to do. We can also work creatively in various ways. I have taught this approach to trainee counsellors.

Alongside my practice I have trained in other approaches all of which enable me to choose what is appropriate for the individual client. One of these is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. CBT as it is known works with our thoughts and behaviours which may be having a detrimental effect on us. If we can change our thoughts and behaviours we generally improve how we feel.
